Driving
instructor training at Quality Driver Ltd is done on a 1-2-1 basis only (one
pupil to one tutor). We charge £25 per hour for training, usually in 3 hour
sessions (£75 per session). Our aim
is to make each session as interesting and as productive as possible so each
session will be broken down in to 2 segments. The first segment will deal
with the part 1 exam the second the part 2. When the part 1 exam has been
past then the first segment will deal with part 2 and the second part 3 and
so on until you are a qualified A.D.I. We find
this structure does suit most of our trainees, however the way the sessions
are structured will be open to discussion and tailored to the individual
needs.
To
become a Department of Transport (D.o.T.) Approved Driving Instructor
(A.D.I.) you will need to pass the 3 qualifying exams, which are referred as
the Part 1,2 and 3 exams. Part 1:- This is
a test of your knowledge. You will be given 100 questions about driving, car
control, The Highway Code, teaching techniques and other subjects relating
driving in general and being a driving instructor. The 100
questions are split into 4 bands and you must achieve 80% in each band, but
your overall mark must total 85% or more to pass. If you
do achieve 85% or more but your mark for 1 of the bands is less than 80% you
will still fail the exam. Part 2:- This is
when your driving ability will be tested. You will
be given an extended driving test, which will last approximately 1 hour. You will
be asked to drive on a variety of different roads including motorways. The
standard is very high and you will only be allowed to make 6 minor faults (6
faults would be a pass and 7 would be a fail). If you make 1 serious or
dangerous mistake you will also fail. After
passing the part 2 exam, you can if you wish begin teaching pupils to drive
for money or reward. This
involves applying for a license to give instruction. To be eligible to apply
you will have had to complete 40 hours training in 20 set subjects and have
had this training logged. Your training log will then be submitted with your
application. You will
only be allowed to work for a driving school that has a fully qualified
A.D.I. working for them. The
ratio of A.D.I.’s to trainees should not exceed 1:1. The
training license will only last for 6 months and you will normally only be
allowed 1 license. Part 3:- The part
3 exam is by far the most difficult of the 3 exams. This is a test of your
instructional ability. An
examiner will act the part of a pupil and you be expected to teach him or her
in one of 10 pre-set test. The exam
is split into 2 phases and the examiner will play a totally different pupil
in each phase, whilst also giving you directions in order to keep you in the
area which he has pre-selected for the exam. Many
people who have never come across “Roll Play” before, which this is what the
part 3 exam is all about, do find this concept a little strange at first but
most do adapt very quickly. To pass
this exam you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above in each phase. The
A.D.I. Grading System. As we
have mentioned at the end of the part 3 exam you will be graded. The
grade given on the exam is for the purpose of the exam only and is not your
official grade. Your
official grade will be given to you on the date of your 2nd check test (your
first check test is for education purposes only and will usually take place
about 3 months after your name has been entered on to the register of
approved driving instructors). This is the grade that will affect your status
as a driving instructor. The
grading system starts at 1 through 6. Grade 1 being the lowest grade we can
be given and will usually mean you have or are about to be removed from the
register of D.o.T. A.D.I.’s. Grade 6 being the highest and at this grade your
check test will usually be 4 or more years apart on average. |
